Every hookup site has fake profiles. The question is how many, who put them there, and whether you can tell. Once you know the patterns, most fakes are obvious within two messages.
The three kinds of fake
Scammers. Real people pretending to be someone else, usually to get money: gift cards, “travel costs”, crypto, or blackmail after getting you to send photos. They exist on every platform, including the good ones.
Bots. Automated profiles that send identical opening lines to thousands of accounts, usually to push you toward an external website or a paid webcam link.
Site-run profiles. Some sites, particularly smaller “flirt” and “local hookup” brands, operate profiles themselves to keep men messaging and paying. The legal cover is in the terms: look for words like “virtual profiles”, “entertainment”, “operators” or “fictional”. If you see them, the site is telling you, quietly, that some of the people messaging you are staff.
Red flags
- She messages you first within minutes of joining, before you have added a photo.
- Instant, generic replies that do not respond to what you actually said.
- A push to upgrade so you can read or reply to her message.
- A link to another site, a “verification” page, or a request to move to Telegram or WhatsApp right away.
- Model-quality photos and no casual ones.
- A sad story and a money request. Anyone asking for money is a scammer. Every time.
- Refuses a quick video call but keeps making plans to meet.
The two-minute check before you meet
- Reverse image search one or two photos. If they turn up on a model’s Instagram or a stock photo site, you have your answer.
- Ask for a short video call. Real people who plan to meet you are almost always fine with thirty seconds on video.
- Ask something specific about a detail in their profile. Bots cannot answer and scammers get vague.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto, and do not send explicit photos to someone you have not verified.
Meeting safely
- Meet somewhere public the first time.
- Tell a friend where you are going and when you will check in.
- Arrange your own transport, both ways.
- Keep your home address to yourself until you are comfortable.
Which sites are the most honest
The big, long-running sites have real members. Their problem is different: years of inactive profiles that make the site look busier than it is.
