If you have opened a porn site recently and been asked to upload an ID, scan your face, or been told the site is simply not available in your state, you have met the biggest change to the adult internet in twenty years. This is how it happened, how the checks work, and why different sites have reacted so differently.
How we got here
- Jan 2023 Louisiana goes first
Louisiana’s law takes effect, requiring age verification on sites where more than a third of the content is adult material.
- May 2023 Pornhub blocks Utah
Rather than verify users, Pornhub’s owner blocks the whole state in protest at Utah’s new law. It becomes the standard response.
- Mar 2024 Texas is blocked
After courts allow Texas’s law to take effect, Pornhub withdraws from Texas too.
- Jun 2025 France and the Supreme Court
Pornhub’s owner suspends its sites in France over new verification rules. Weeks later the US Supreme Court upholds Texas’s law in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton.
- Jul 2025 The UK switches on
Age checks under the Online Safety Act become enforceable on 25 July. The European Commission publishes its own guidelines and a blueprint for an age-verification app.
- 2026 The new normal
More than 20 US states now have age-verification laws for adult sites, and European rules continue to tighten.
The Supreme Court decision in June 2025 was the turning point in the US. Before it, sites and industry groups hoped the laws would be struck down as a violation of free speech. The court ruled 6 to 3 that states can require age verification for sites with substantial adult content. Since then the question is no longer whether these laws survive, but how sites comply.
How the checks actually work
There are four common methods, and many sites let you pick:
- ID document plus selfie. You photograph a driving licence or passport and take a selfie so the system can match them. Accurate, but it means handing over the most sensitive document you own.
- Facial age estimation. A camera scan estimates your age without identifying you. Fast and ID-free, but less precise near the age limit, so it usually gives a margin of error.
- Credit card or mobile checks. Your card issuer or mobile network confirms you are an adult. Common in the UK.
- Digital ID and wallets. State digital IDs in some US states, and the EU’s planned age-verification app, can confirm “over 18” without sharing anything else.
Most sites use specialist third-party providers rather than building this themselves. The better ones promise to delete your data immediately after the check. Read the provider’s privacy notice before you upload an ID anywhere.
Why some sites comply and others block
The biggest name, Pornhub’s owner Aylo, has repeatedly chosen to block entire states and countries rather than verify. Its argument is that site-by-site ID checks push people toward sites that ignore the law, which are often the least safe corners of the internet, and that verification should happen on the device instead.
Others comply. Many premium sites and cam sites have added verification where it is required, because their users are already paying members and a one-time check is a smaller hurdle for them.
For you, that creates an odd situation: in some places the biggest, most moderated free site is unavailable while less careful sites are still one search away.
What this means for you
- If a site asks you to verify, prefer methods that do not store your ID, such as age estimation or a card check, and use providers that say they delete data after checking.
- If a site is blocked where you live, that is the site’s decision about the law in your area. My tier lists note availability issues so you can choose something that works where you are.
- Be careful with look-alike sites. Blocks create opportunities for copycat and scam sites. Stick to established names.
- Paid memberships are the least disrupted. Most premium sites and cam sites have kept working because they verify members.
