What it is like to use
Adult FriendFinder is less a dating site than a sprawling adult social network. Beyond profiles and messaging there are chat rooms, member webcams, groups, blogs and a busy feed of member activity. Singles, couples and swingers all use it, and it is one of the few places where a couple looking for a third is completely normal.
It has been running since 1996, and it shows in both directions. The member base is enormous and genuinely includes real, active people, especially in and around cities. It also includes years of inactive profiles, which is why the headline membership number means very little. Judge AFF by who replies to you, not by the size of the search results.
The design is cluttered. There is a lot on every page, and it takes a while to learn where things are.

A free Basic account lets you create a profile, browse and use some features, but properly messaging people needs Gold:

If you are going to give it a real go, three months is the sensible middle ground: long enough to get results, without committing to a year.
Honesty and safety
AFF is a real site with real members. Its weaknesses are dead profiles and a busy interface, not fake operators. Still, apply the usual checks from my guide to spotting fake hookup profiles: reverse-search photos, ask for a quick video call, and never send money to anyone.
The site suffered a major data breach in 2016. Use a separate email address, a unique password and a username that is not your name.
